Invisalign®

Invisalign® is an alternative to braces that uses clear, removable aligners to straighten and move your teeth. This means that you don’t need to standard brackets, wires, and rubber bands that are used in common braces.

According to Invisalign’s website, there are five easy steps for getting the perfect smile with Invisalign®, which includes:

  1. Get an Invisalign® consultation from your dentist.
  2. Receive a treatment plan personalized to you and your teeth.
  3. Get customized aligners that fit your teeth.
  4. Pick-up and start using your new, personalized aligners.
  5. Live your life while your aligners work to straighten your teeth

Things like the amount of time you wear the aligners and how often you change them depend on the specific treatment plan that’s created for your teeth.

Customization

This customized plan is the key to how Invisalign® works. Since your dentist is taking the time to look at what your specific teeth need, they are able to formulate a treatment plan for your teeth. The aligners are computer generated using a mold or impression that the dentist took of your teeth. This means that the aligners fit uniquely to your teeth only, giving you the customization you need to help your teeth move and align.

How the Aligners Work

The treatment plan you get from your dentist will map out the movement of your teeth as you wear the clear aligners. The aligners work by providing just the right amount of force to your teeth to move them to the right place over a set course of time.

This is where the importance of follow up appointments with your dentist comes in. They will be able to monitor the progress of your teeth as they move, making sure that you’re following the timeline of your treatment plan.

In order to make sure your teeth are adjusting, you’ll want to wear your Invisalign® for 20 to 22 hours a day. This gives you enough time to take your aligners out when you have to eat, drink, or brush and floss your teeth.
